When you forget, it rains.
The KBO is heading for fall baseball, but fall rains are getting in the way. Of the 13 games that have been rained out since the league announced the reorganization of the remaining games on Sept. 29, the Doosan-Lotte game in Busan on Sept. 4 is the only one that has been played through the ‘reorganization of the reorganization’. When the KBO announced the rescheduling of the remaining games, the regular season deadline was set for Oct. 10, but another rainout without a reserve date caused a headache.
The Doosan Bears are the team with the most cancelations since the reorganization. Their game against the LG Twins in Jamsil on March 29 and 30 was rained out, followed by the Lotte Giants in Busan on March 1, the KIA Tigers in Jamsil on March 5, and the SSG Landers in Jamsil on March 13. All five games were pushed to a later date due to the lack of a reserve day. With one rescheduling already in place and the rest of the teams’ schedules, the team will eventually have to play another game after the 10th.
For now, the regular season will end on October 15. The postseason begins on October 17, and the final deadline is November 13, assuming the teams make it to Game 7 of the Korean Series. The schedule has been pushed back until mid-November, when outdoor games are not easy to attend.
Preparations for the 2023 Asian Professional Baseball Championship (APBC), which will be held in Tokyo, Japan, on Nov. 16, have also become more difficult. The tournament, which will be held for the first time in six years since 2017, will feature three days of pool play between South Korea, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Australia, with the top two teams playing the final on Nov. 19. The roster will be dominated by players under the age of 24 and in their third year of professional play, with most of the players on the final roster likely coming from postseason teams. It’s hard for players to come straight from fall baseball, which is much more demanding than the regular season, to play internationally in a national team uniform. A sweep of the best-of-seven Korean Series would give them some breathing room, but there are no guarantees.
In the meantime, rain has been reported in most parts of the country since the 15th. The LG-Hanwha game in Daejeon on the 15th and the Samsung-NC game in Changwon on the 15th and 16th do not have a reserve day and will be organized later in case of rain cancellation. From the KBO’s point of view, it is also a “kichung festival” to pray for the rain to stop.
